History of Russia

Heads of the state

The Princess Olga (? - 969)

OLGA (?-969) the princess, the wife of Kiev prince Igor. She ruled in the early childhood of her son Svjatoslav and during his campaigns. She suppressed the revolt of Drevljane. She accepted the christianity (about 957).

Olga sacred (in a christening Elena)-
Russian princess, the wife of Igor Rjurikovich. Many suppositions about her origin were made. In the initial chronicle it was only mentioned about Oleg`s bringing a wife from Pleskov (Pskov?) for Igor who had the name Olga (in 903).

On the basis of the information of one of the latest chronicles Pleskov was Bulgarian town (Pliskuva) and Olga considered to be Bulgarian princess; but that was only the supposition though it explained many facts of ancient Russian history but it is impossible to take it for granted.

After the death of Igor Olga began to rule Kiev`s estate for her juvenile son Svjatoslav. According to the chronicles she severely revenged to Drevljane who killed her husband, and she established in the lands of drevlyane the tribute and the natural duties; then she went to the Novgorod lands and arranged there the administrative centres and appointed the tributes and quitrents in favour of prince.
In 955, according to the chronicles, Olga went to Constantinople where she was christened; but Greek emperor Konstantin Porfirorodnyj told about the staying Olga in Constantinople in 957 but did not mention about her christening there. Possibly Olga was christened in Kiev before the trip to Constantinople. There were many Christians-varyagi in Kiev at that time.
According to the (doubtful) news of the western historians Olga sent the embassy to the German king Ottonu 1 (in 959) with the request to send to her a bishop and priests, that request was carried out but the sent bishop had to come back with nothing. The attempts of Olga to convert her son Svjatoslav to Christianity were unsuccessful.
In 969 Olga died at old age, saying to bury her according to the christian ceremony.
She is among the sacred in the church and the day of the memory about her is celebrated on July, 11th.
